Manufacturers have made their choices on which refrigerants will be used to replace R-410a. Replacement refrigerants are required because R-410a is being phased down due to the global reduction of HFC refrigerants. The Chem Penn family has introduced their 28oz. disposable R32 can with standard 1/4" SAE fitting. Ideal for duct-less recharge or top-off, this affordable size is a must in any contractor's tool bag. Chem Penn also offers the option of a 4-pack with a display box. R-32 has a GWP of 675, which is below the maximum GWP of 700 allowable under the new regulations. One of the reasons cited for choosing R-32 is that it is a single-component refrigerant and NOT a blend. It has been extensively in use for many years. It is less expensive than some of the other refrigerants under consideration and it reduces electrical usage by almost 10% compared to R-22. R-32 is considered a close match to R-410a. Many of the equipment components will interchange, while a few, like compressors, filter driers, and printed circuit boards will have to be different because of the flammability issue. R-410a is safely classified as A-1 (non-toxic, non-flammable). R-32 is safely classified as A-2L (non-toxic, lightly flammable). Environmentalists believe the low-GWP number of 675 is far more important than the minor flammability issue of the refrigerant. It is their belief the world will be better off with lower GWP refrigerants. With the flammability issue, there are requirements for technicians to be trained in the refrigerants.
